Talismanic Richmond forward Brett Deledio has avoided major damage after suffering a calf strain in the Tigers' 19-point win over Essendon.

The 29-year-old was unable to play the second half against the Bombers but scans on Monday have given Richmond a slice of good news ahead of Sunday's match with league leaders Hawthorn.

Deledio will be assessed ahead of the match, with the Tigers yet to rule him out prior to Friday's selection.

After a career devoid of serious injuries, Deledio has suffered setbacks during Richmond's horror 2016 campaign.

A calf complaint through the pre-season was followed by a quad issue that sidelined him for the opening five rounds.

Richmond sit 13th on the ladder with seven wins, with only a faint mathematical chance of qualifying for the finals.
